The Blumenfeld's Alpha-Phonics Self-Tutor is designed to facilitate (make easy) a student's learning to read and spell. This special edition of Blumenfeld's Alpha-Phonics is edited to make it easier for the student of all ages to follow the recorded audio instruction for each lesson. The content follows very closely the 1997/2005 edition, but the material which was originally in columns has been put into numbered rows to make it is easier for the students to follow the audio. Teachers can assign their students to listen to the recordings to prepare for the lessons. Older student who want to learn to read on their own can use the audio instruction to teach themselves. Manuscript handwriting font is used in all the printed material. The program is highly effective for both beginning and remedial reading.
The procedures for using the audio is for the student to
Point to each word while listening to the recording.
Point to each word and read along with the audio.
Read the words independently. Students can use pause to read the word first and then hit play to check to see if the read the word or sentence correctly. This feedback is very helpful in developing accuracy.
Beside reading the words and sentences, it is important to have the students copy them into a notebook with paper lined for handwriting. This makes the program fully multisensory and greatly improves recall for reading and spelling. The Zaner-Bloser First-Grade handwriting templates are excellent.
The student will be the best person to judge when they are ready to read the words and sentences to the teacher and to write them from dictation.
The student should always repeat the word being spelled before and after spelling. Spelling can be in writing or orally with letter names. Ability to write dictated words and sentences is the best proof of mastery. The method is essentially a spell-to-read program.
📚 Our goal is nothing short of a Complete Reshaping of the Educational Landscape in America. The simple act of restoring direct handwriting and spelling to American education, as outlined in our program, has the potential of transforming America into a true Nation of Literates.
